The Truth About Ego, Fear & Freedom - Awake Into Ease with Gina Lake

If you’ve ever felt caught in a loop of fear, dissatisfaction, or the constant sense that “something’s missing,” you're not alone. In fact, it’s not you — it’s the ego.

In this powerful video below, spiritual teacher Gina Lake breaks down the root cause of so much internal conflict: the ego's programming. She reveals how the ego creates fear and lack by constantly scanning the world through a lens of separation, scarcity, and self-protection.

✨ “The ego loves problems and creates problems... this present moment actually does not have a problem. It doesn't frame anything as a problem. It's just what is."

What if you didn’t need to manage, fix, or heal the ego — but instead, awaken out of it?

In this short clip, Gina invites you to return to the simplicity of the present moment — where life flows effortlessly, love expands naturally, and peace becomes your default state. It’s a glimpse into her 3-part series, Awakening Out of the Ego.

If you’re longing for more freedom, less reactivity, and a deeper connection to your true self, this message is for you.

Check out Gina's message below for a sample of the teachings from her April series and discover how awakening out of the ego can transform your experience of life.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:

So the ego is a very primitive aspect of ourselves, actually something that we barely need. We need it to create a sense of separation, because we need to know I'm me and you are you, in order to carry out this play that we're involved in, this game of life, where we're all pretending to be unique individuals. The ego, at its best, does that for us.

It helps us feel that we are separate, contained individual, separate from other people, separate from God, separate from things and objects. And so it does serve that. But this separation, this sense of separation, creates a sense of me versus the world and fear.

So the ego is programming that creates a sense of fear. Now there's fear that's practical, like if a tiger's in your environment, you feel afraid, and that's going to help you escape the tiger. But most fear in our modern society is not practical.

It's created by the voice in our head, by an idea about some unknown future. So there's a pretense, fear is a pretense, that something terrible is going to happen. It's made up, and it's made up by the voice in our head.

And in that sense, it is dysfunctional. But that is what the ego does, that is what the one of the jobs of the voice in our head is, it creates fear. And it looks out at the world from a fearful set of eyes.

What's a problem? What's going to hurt me? How can I get on top? How can I be safe and more secure? And so from that perspective, it's going to oppose things in the environment, and oppose people often, trying to be superior to people, trying to get more for itself than other people have. The selfishness, the self-centeredness, all of the things that we think of when we think of ego, is there because the ego is essentially fearful. So it wants to be right, it wants to be superior, it wants to have lots of money, lots of things, lots of safety, in order to protect itself.

This is the antithesis of love, and unity, and our divine nature. The ego does not trust life. And that is our challenge, to discover that life is actually trustworthy, that we are divine beings, that we are being guided by wisdom, intelligence, a wisdom and intelligence that the ego does not have.

It's just programming, and it's programmed to take care of me. It's programmed to have me at the center of the universe, and to think about me. And if you examine your thoughts, even if you don't examine your thoughts, you must be very aware of how many thoughts are all about me.

And when people open their mouths, what they speak about is often about I, right? I like, I want, I need, I had this experience, I want to have this experience, so-and-so did this to me. It's all about me. And this me is the false self.

And we get very involved in this me, myself, and I, because we're very involved with our thoughts. If we weren't very involved with our thoughts and believing our thoughts, we wouldn't, we wouldn't have such a focus on ourselves. We would just fall into the mystery, fall into the moment, and we would just flow in a way that the ego does not.

We would just be in the moment, and be guided intuitively, and just know what we need to do. Because this divine self is able to draw on all of the conditioning, the positive conditioning, and the positive experiences and learning that the self has acquired, and the ego already knows. The divine self can draw on all of that intelligence that's part of our conditioning.

So it doesn't, it doesn't, you don't need the ego to, to guide you, because it was through your conditioning. The divine self already knows how to be a human, and how to behave, and how to act. All of that conditioning is available to the divine self.

So the ego is not a wise, intelligent thing at all. It's not an entity. And the other thing besides looking out at the world and seeing fear, the other basic characteristic of the ego, is it sees lack.

And that's one of the reasons it feels fear, is it looks out at the world and says, there's not enough. I'm not enough. The world is not enough.

I don't have enough. So this, this lack and this fear creates a sense of the glass is half empty. And I have to get more and more and more.

And so in every moment, the ego is dissatisfied. There's this ongoing discontentment, dissatisfaction, and resistance to life. The ego loves problems and creates problems.

And that this present moment actually does not have a problem. It doesn't frame anything as a problem. It's just what is.

And you just do what is called for in that moment to take care of whatever needs taking care of. Life becomes so much more simple. So, so simple, so ordinary, so easeful.

And that's why you can be happy and at peace. Because there is an absence of problems, of negative stories, of negative emotions. So I'm here to say it's possible to truly be happy, to be at peace, to flow through your day, to, to spread love, to, to feel abundant, and to abundantly give and receive and live the life that you're meant to live, because we're all here for a specific purpose.

And most of you are having a lifetime, no doubt, where spiritual growth is primary. And that's wonderful. It's a great blessing.
